MRS. H. E. LADLEY The death occurred in Kelson on Sunday of Mrs. H. E. Ladley, at the ago of 78. Mrs. Ladley was a daughter of the late Mr. Edward Baigent, who. in the days of the Provincial Government, was a member of the Nelson House of Representatives. Mrs. Ladley married Mr. Walter Ladley, an inspector of schools. Her husband died about 25 years ago. She leaves six daughters and two sons. MR. W. F. BOWES For 34 years an enginedriver in the employ of the Railway Department, Mr. W. F. Bowes died at his home at. 251 Parnell Road, yetserday, at the age of 78.Air. Bowes, a native of Ramsgate, Kent, arrived in New Zealand by the ship Waikato in 1874 with about 300 other immigrants. Air. Bowes was fireman on the first engine to run over the section from Aramoho to Turakina, and was also on the engine of the first passenger train from Wanganui to Hawera. Air. Bowes was later transferred to Christchurch. Here he frequently drove the old double Fairlie engine Josephine, which was shown at the Dunedin Exhibition. Air. Bowes married a daughter of the Into Air. J. AlcElwain, of Wanganui. Their golden wedding was celebrated in 1927. MRS. ELIZABETH MACKIE The death of Mrs. Elizabeth Maekie, aged 86, occurred recently at the home of her son, Air. R. T. B. Alaekie, of Waihi. Airs. Alaekie, who was born in France, was a daughter of Air. Thomas Dali, manager of a company which manufactured large .quantities of canvas for the British Navy of that day. During a rising in France, Mr. Dali took his family back to his native city in Scotlahd. and, in 1852, the family came to the Dominion in the ship, Slain’s Castle. They settled at Dunedin. where ?.liss Dali married the kite Air. Robert Alaekie. Air. and Airs. - Alaekie paid a visit to Scotland some years later. On their return voyage fever broke out on board. 19 passengers dying, including Mrs. Mackie’S second son. The family lived for many years at Palmerston North and Te Aroha. Airs. Alaekie is survived by two daughters and four sons, and there are 16 grandchildren and seven greatgrandchildren.
