RIALTO AND REGENT, EPSOM
“THE MASKS OF THE DEVIL” A graphic plumbing of human souls in the torment of life, and one of the most remarkable of "dual-personality" narratives is the latest John Gilbert starring role, in “The Masks of the Devil," now at the Rialto and Regent, Epsom, Theatres. Based on the famous novel by Jacob Wassermann, this picture is unlike anything ever before produced on the silver sheet: it violates all rules of dramatic construction in its daring audacity in telling the truth about human nature—and as a result it is one of the most gripping, haunting human documents an audience l«as ever seen. John Gilbert. master craftsman in the art of depicting thi extreme human emotions, and Victor Seastrom. the Swedish genius who directed this dramatic cross-section of human souls, both achieve distinctive triumphs. “The Lily of Killarney." a charming romance of Irish life, is the second feature at both theatres. LABOUR PARTY BALL One of the events of the year so far as the local branches of the Labour Party are concerned will be the grand masked ball to be held in the Scots Hall this evening. Plain and fancy dress will be worn, but all dancers will unmask at 9.30. A full orchestra will play and the spirit of carnival should prevail. No less than eight first prizes will be awarded for fancy dresses. Every arrangement has been made for ihe success of this ball, and it should prove a decidedly happy evening.
