Mail Bags Stolen From Post Office

SETTLER’S DISCOVERY THEFT AT NETHERTON (Special to THE SUN) PAEROA, Monday. The discovery was made yesterday afternoon that two bags of mail had been stolen from the Netherton Post Office, and the letters opened. Two bags of mail were locked up in the post office at Netherton on Saturday afternoon. As there is no delivery of letters on a Saturday afternoon the mail would remain in the office till Monday. Mr. W. Smith, was collecting wood on the river bank about 300yds below the post office yesterday afternoon when he saw a mall bag caught up in some rushes on the bank. He immediately communicated with the mail carrier. It was found that every letter had been opened and searched, and then replaced in one of the bags which had been placed in the second bag and thrown in the river. The postmaster in Paoroa was communicated with and, together with the police, visited the scene and made a thorough search of the locality. Nothing else in the post office .had been touched. The opened mail was as far as possible delivered to the addressees today. The postal authorities cannot estimate what has been stolen, but believe the contents of some packages are missing.
