ROLLER MILLS SHIELD TOURNEY COMMENCES The week of the year in primary school Rugby circles in Auckland Province opened at the Showgrounds, Epsom, this morning, when the annual competition for possession of the Northern Roller Mills Shield was commenced. Seven teams from Auckland City and various parts of the province are competing. The following are the results of the first-round games in the A and B sections played this morning:Thames Valley S, Auckland Central 3. Soutli Auckland 6, Waipa 3. Auckland South 11, King Country 3. THAMES VALLEY WINS The Auckland Central - Thames Valley match was a willing contest from whistle to whistle, and half-time saw the teams level. 3 all. Metlierell having scored for the Valley, and Bieleski for Auckland. In the second spell, the visitors went ahead when Coxhead scored a try. which he also converted. Thames Valley 8, Auckland Central 3. Despite strenuous efforts in the final quarter, the Auckland lads could not improve their position, and the game ended without any further score. WAIPA BEATEN A hard-fought tussle resulted when South Auckland met Waipa. After many attempts. L. Parris and C. Jones scored for South Auckland. The tries were not converted. Just before time AI. Bell landed a penalty for Waipa. Enthusiasm ran high in the closing quarter, but Waipa could not improve its position, and the game ended: South Auckland, 6; Waipa, 3. AUCKLAND SOUTH GAME The Auckland South - King Country game produced the best football of the morning. Tho Auckland side went to the fore early in the game, but after that tlie*contest was very even. Both sets of backs were seen in sparkling movements. The Auckland forwards, however, asserted their superiority over the country lads, and Auckland South ran out winners by 11 points to 3. O'Connor, Matthews, and Bell scored tries for Auckland, Bell converting one. For King Country. McDermott scored an unconverted try.
