FLOOD AND CYCLONE

DISASTER IN YUGOSLAVIA MANY PEOPLE DROWNED (Australian and N.Z. Press Association) VIENNA, Saturday. At least 50 people were drowned the result of a sudden flood at Skoplje, in Yugoslavia. A cyclone whirled thi-ough the town at midnight, uprooting trees and throwing them across roads. Then followed a cloudburst, which swept over the mountains surrounding the- town. A deluge poured down each valley toward the town. Panic-stricken people assembled in the streets and dashed hither and thither in frantic attempts to escape. The Mahommedan quarter was demolished in a few moments. Cafes and houses collapsed and the electric power failed. The darkness increased the horror. Eight hundred buildings were destroyed and 700 families are now homeless. The torrent remorselessly rushed on and destroyed other villages. The total number of the casualties will not be known for some days.
