GALLANT GALLIPOLI FOE

LIMAN VON SANDERS DEAD lAN HAMILTON’S PRAISE (Australian and N.Z. Press Association) LONDON, Saturday. A message from Munich reports the death of General Liman von Sanders, who led the Turks at Gallipoli. General Sir lan Hamilton, in a tribute to the deceased soldier, says: “He was a most chivalrous fo,e, as all who fought against him will agree. Often he might easily have fired on our wounded, yet he always avoided any breach of the rules of war. “His name after the war was on the list of those to be tried for their actions during the hostilities. I sent a letter to ‘The Times’ saying I was assured I spoke for the Dardanelles troops in saying they did not wish to see him tried. “He was a clean fighter and played fair in our brief armistice. He never shelled our clearing station, hospitals or camps.”
