FOR DUNEDIN

AUCKLAND CROSS-COUNTRY TEAM The executive committee of the Auckland Centre of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association on Saturday afternoon selected the following team to represent the Auckland Province at the New Zealand 10.000 metres cross-country Championship at Dunedin on Saturday next: J. W. Savidan F. L. Witten L. C. Barker J. A. Crum S. Andrews A. H. Eyre j Two men previously selected, X. F. Cooper and G. Kells, were unable to make the trip. Kells is working for the Public Works Department at Puhitahi, and cannot get the necessary leave. The same problem prevents Cooper from representing his province. The absence of these two men weakens the Auckland team considerably, but while the six men selected form what at best can only be called a scratch team, they may surprise Southern competitors. J. W. Savidan left for the South last evening, and the other five follow this evening. Savidan has been the Dominion cross-country* title holder for the past two seasons, and he should take a power of defeating this time. Morris, of Otago. Barnes, of Canterbury, and Francis, of j Gisborne, are expected to make him go all out, however. Witten is one of the most promising runners in Auckland, and figured prominently at the recent Auckland-Well-ington Training College tourney at Auckland. He competed at the Dominion meeting at Wanganui last year. Barker also represented Auckland last year, and finished 14th in the Dominion event. Tie is a much improved runner. Crum is an old hand at the game. He represented Auckland last year, Tuning in twelfth. Tie is only just recovered from an illness, and till Saturday week did not reveal his true form. His race on Saturday afternoon, however, gave indications of something better, and by Saturday next he should be back in the pink. Andrews is a newcomer to Auckland. Last year he represented Wellington Province at Wanganui, and finished eighth in the Dominion event. He was a member of the Hutt Valley Club when in Wellington. Eyre also is a Wellington man who came to Auckland this year. He is a new man in interprovincial cross-coun-try running. STEEPLE TO McNEIL ATHLETICS ON DOMAIN The three and a-lialf mile steeplechase conducted by the Technical College Old Boys' Amateur Athletic Club at the Domain on Saturday was won by H. McNeil, after a race during which he held the lead from start to finish. The race was not a particularly exciting one, owing probably to the fact that the men who were chosen for the Dunedin trip did not desire to take things too seriously. J. W. Savidan, after running an easy race, secured fastest time. He was followed by Cooper, Witten and Kells in that order. Alf Clarke, who was among the first away, ran a good race, and followed McNeil to the tape. Then came Clapham, Cooper and Witten. Savidan, from scratch, was tenth on the list. The 75 yards handicap sprint resulted in a win for a former professional champion of New Zealand, B. T. Murray. Murray won the first heat and the second went to McNeil, also a man with a liberal handicap. Following are the results: 75 YARDS HANDICAP First Heat B. T. MURRAY <l4yds) . 1 R. WILLEY (sJyds) 2 M.
