Two Surprises

Barometer and Flying Prince

Pakuranga Meeting at Ellerslie

IP the annual race meeting' oi Ellerslie on Saturday \va expeeted in the province this the leeway noticeable throug' made up and sportsmen will l to some excellent sport. The continuous rain over the past month or so had left the Ellerslie course in a sodden state, but the going on Saturday was not worse than soft. Although there were only six starters ill three of the eight races, the events were all most keenly contested. The Pakuranga Hunt Cup was productive of fine jumping, and for the first half of the journey the lield kept together. From this point onward Pompeius was always in the van. and making every post a winning one, the Te Rapa trained gelding landed the stake. He was ridden by R. Syme, who had scored two wins at Riccarton the previous week on Wiltshire. Sea Comet, penalised 51b. for his win in the opening event, the Greenmount Steeplechase. and another earlier winner, Soami, followed Pompeius home. Dual Surprise It was a mild surprise to find the two principal flat events going to outsiders. Barometer, in view of his second to Seatown and King Emerald at the Great Northern meeting, was at a royal double-figure price, and he scored well from King Emerald and Maori Boy. Flying Prince set a merry pace in the sprint, the Dunedin Handicap, and won from end to end, registering a fine performance. He looks like being a good three-year-old this season. Closest to him at the finish were the consistent Paddon and Gold Money. Both hack flat races were won by horses from J. T. Jamieson’s stable, Refresher and Sea Cob, both of whom should soon get on the winning list again shortly. The Ladies’ Bracelet, for the amateur riders, was won decisively by Calitlie, who was ridden by his owner, Mr. D. R. Jackson, of Waverley. The management of the meeting was such as is expeeted of fixtures at Ellerslie, the secretary, Mr. W. S. Spence, and his executive having the arrangements well organised. The Judicial Committee had an easy day. The attendance was good, and speculation brisk. The totalisator handled £40,958, compared with £39,186 at last year’s meeting, an increase on Saturday of £1,802. Greenmount Steeplechase Backers of the favoui'ite missed the first time, Town Rambler* £707 being preferred to Sea Comet £502, with Marita £425 fourth choice. Tempera-

ture led over the first fence, where Foxhound tipped out. On the hill Temperature was still making play from Town Rambler, Marita, Haeremai and Sea Comet, and over the double on the flat Sea Comet had gone to the front, being attended by Temperature, Marita, Haeremai and Town Rambler. The favourite made a fast run along the back, and on the hill the second time there was little between Sea Comet. Marita, Town Rambler and Haeremai. Coming to the last fence Marita was slightly in front of Sea Comet, with Haeremai and Town j Rambler some lengths back. Sea j Comet did best on The flat and won by ! three lengths, with Marita eight length's j in front of Haeremai. Town Ramj bier was a length and a-half oack, j and Temperature tailed off. Hunters’ Hurdles Another bare two-dividend field came out for the Hunters' Hurdles, Master Roley, with £1,164, being a warm favourite, but he made one or two very wild jumps and was beaten into second place. The eventual winner, Soami, was third fancy with £SOB on her chances. Fair Abbey led past the stands from Abbot’s Delight, Master Roley, Waiau Lady, Master Clements and Soami. Along the back Master Roley was taken to the front, but he ran the hurdle at the five down very badly. He was still in charge turning for home. Fair Abbey being next and Soami coming fast. The latter was first over the last obstacle and came on to win comfortably bv three lengths from Master Roley, Master Clements being ten lengths back third, just in front of Fair Abbey, with Waiau Lady some way off. Abbot’s Delight fell at the second to last fence, when well beaten. Sylvia Park Handicap Motere (£791). Refresher (£607) and Valroe (£544) were the main fancies for the Sylvia Park Handicap, in which Tukunoa began smartest and led out from Refresher. Valroe, Lusoma, Otranto. Arikatoa and Takar»nga. Passing the five furlongs, Tukunoa, Refresher, Valroe, Lusoma, Otranto. and Arikitoa were the leading division, with the favourite a long way back. Approaching the straight Valroe assumed command and led round the turn from Refresher, Lusoma. Otranto, Arikitoa, Takarunga and Valquette, with the favourite showing up. At the distance Refresher took charge and although strongly challenged by Arikitoa and Takarunga. the three-year-old hung on gamely to win by a neck from Arikitoa. who was three-quarters of a length in front of Takarunga. Motere. who finished well, and Valroe were right up, and then came Otranto, Valquette, Mon Star, Ivillute and Lusoma. Jellicoe Handicap High Pitch £1,065 was elected fa- ( vourite for the Jellicoe Handicap, with good support for Queen Arch £792 and King Emerald £755. The winner turned up in Barometer, who carried only £360. The Lover, Taneriri and King Emerald got the worst of a walk-in start, Tinokoa leading out from Welkne Maori Boy, Unoco, Valsier, Barometer and High Pitch. Along the back Welkne went to the lead and showed the way to Tinokoa. Welkne. Maori Boy. Ungco. Barometer, Valsier, High Pitch. Queen Arch, True Blood, The Lover and King Emerald (who went through from here very fast on the j rails), with Taneriri and King Willonyx I last. Tinokoa went to the front cross- j ing the top from Welkne. Barometer. Maori Boy, King Emerald and High Pitch, but then Barometer went to the and led into the straight from Welkne, Tinokoa. King Emerald, Maori Boy, High Pitch and Queen Arch, who were well bunched

: the Pakuranga Hunt Club at s an example of wliat is to be season, then it is evident that hont last racing term will be >e justified in looking forward | In the run home Barometer did best | and won by a length from King Emj ewald, with Maori Boy two lengths ; away third and True Blood fourth. The next to cross the line were The Lover. High Pitch, Queen Arch. Sir Archie. Thursby, Welkne, Taneriri and King Willonyx. Hunt Cup Pompeius, £1,349, was a good favourite for the Pakuranga Hunt Cup, and he never caused his backers any uneasiness, winning comfortably. Odin, £1,109, was next choice, with Master Arch, £549, best backed of the remainder, Mashoor led over the stands double from Marita, Stonewall, Master Arch, Sea Comet and Pompeius, but the favourite moved up along the back and took charge going up the hill. Pompeius was well clear passing the stands again, his nearest attendants being Marita, Sea Comet, Mashoor, Terra pee n and Odin. Going up the hill the second time the favourite increased his lead to 10 lengths from Marita, Odin, Sea Comet and Master Arch. The leader was never troubled, to win easily by eight lengths from Sea Comet, who was half that distance in front of Soami at the judge. Marita, Odin and Mashoor were the next to finish. Master Arch fell at the last jump, while Stonewall and Terrapeen were pulled up. Auckland Handicap Sea Cob £1,221 and Bizarro £1,149 carried most money in the Auckland Handicap, with good support for Cybelo £BB7. Some Lady was smartest out, followed by Sea Cob and Catoma, but witli a furlong gone the latter hit the front from Some Laay, Mountain Guide, Sea Cob, Bizarro, Carmint, and Maori Boy. Crossing the top Mountain Guide assumed command to lead into the straight from Some Lady, Carmint, Maori Boy, Bizarro and Sea Cob. When straightened up the latter put in a fine effort and won by two and a-half lengths from Maori Boy, who was half a length in front of Mountain Guide, with Cybele close up fourth. Then came Bizarro, Carmint, Lady Spalpeen, Bom harder, Te Kawana, Catoma .and" Some Lady. Ladies’ Bracelet Th© Waverly owned and trained Calithe', £1,551, was pounced upon as the best of the small field for the Ladies’ Bracelet, and the public judgment proved correct. There was very little between Foxhound, £832, and Abbott’s Delight, £829, for second choice. Charitaine went to the front jbarrier rise .and led out of the 3 straight from Perfecto, Abbott’s Ds- { light and the favourite, and as the f field raced along the back Abobtt’s Dej light ranged alongside Charitaine, while ! Negress improved her position. Cross- ; ing the top the favourite made a forward move and when the home turn 1 was negotiated had taken charge from Charitaine, Foxhound and Negress, j Foxhound .threw out a challenge in the s last furlong, but had no chance with j Calithe, who won by four lengths from i Mr. Irwin’s mount. Charitaine was six lengths away, third, and then came Negress, Abbott's Delight and Perfecto. Dunedin Handicap Backers went solidly for Paddon, £ 1,664, and Gold Money, £1,259, in the Dunedin Handicp, while Partial Eclipse, £SO9, was accorded good support. The favourites made a bold bid. but were beaten by the three-year-old Flying Prince, who carried £428 and won from end to end. Flying Prince, on the rails, led put from Ruffles. Standfast, Paddon, Value and Gold Money, and crossing the top the youngster was still in front from Ruffles. Master O’Rorke, Gold Money, Paddon Bennie, Dave, Automne, Marble King and Oration. The colt was first to turn for home, his closest attendants being Ruffles, Paddon, Gold Money, Master O’Rorke, Automne, Dave and Oration. The two favourites made strenuous efforts to overhaul Flying Prince, but he was not to be denied, and won splendidly by a little more than a length. Paddon beating Gold Money by a neck for second place. Then came Partial Eclipse, Dave, Oration, Ruffles, Master O’Rorke, Marble King, Standfast, Bright Land and Bennie.'
