RIFLE SHOOTING

PAEROA CLUB’S PROGRESS WELLS' TROPHY RESULTS An excellent night’s shooting under the auspices of the Paeroa Defence Miniature Rifle Club took place at the Paeroa Drill Hall on Wednesday evenih*?. when the handicap competition for the trophy donated by Mr. R. Wells was fired. A great all-round improvement has been noted in the shooting since its comencement barely three months ago, and especially among the junior members. The conditions were ten shots and one compulsory sighter, the limit, including the handicap, being 100. In each shoot-off, the handicap of each contestant was reduced to the difference of his previous score off the rifle and 100. Charlesworth, a junior member, went right through to the final shootoff and won the trophy. He improved from 81 off the rifle in the original shoot to 95 in the final. D. Currie was a good second. During the evening Capt. IT. Simmonds registered another possible off the rifle, making the sixth possible to his credit for the season. Fourteen competitors succeeded in reaching the 100, which necessitated them shooting off, the result being:—E. Mead, 06, 5—100; D. Currie, 93, 7—100; M. Charlesworth. 93, 19—100; Capt. 11. Simmonds, 99, scr—99; A. Mellor, 93, 3—96 ; R. W. Roberts, 93, 2 —95; H. Lower. 88, 7—95; F. C. Hubbard, 89, 1—90; L, Morris, SS, 1—89; A. Coxhead, 71, 3—74; T. McCormick, 68, 3—71; John Perston, 46, 14—60; C. Miller, 53, 3—56; E. Turton, junr., absent. Three of the competitors again reached the. 100 mark, the final result, with still reduced handicaps, being:—M. Charlesworth. 95, 7—loo (winner); D. Currie, 92, 7 —99 (second); E. Mead, 93, 4—97 (third). A teams match between members of the club will be arranged for next Wednesday night.
