HOT CORRUGATED IRON. — No, this is not roofing for a fowl house on the Sir James Clarke Ross. It is a blanket of blubber being hoisted aboard. This is the whale's overcoat and, incidentally, is the greatest source of oil. It lies over the muscular tissue and next to the skin. The whalers' first job when a whale is towed alongside is to cut off the blanket of blubber and carry it to the blubber boiler. Great sharp-edged knives are used to cut it down in long strips, when it is attached to hooks and swung aboard.
