JOBS FOR OWN MEN

PAPATOETOE’S WATER CONTRACT AGREEMENT REACHED The trouble between the Papatoetoe Town Board and the contractors for the supply scheme, regarding the employment of local labour, was settled this morning. A conference was held at Papatoetoe this morning between Mr. T. R. Smytheman, chairman of the Papatoetoe Town Board; Mr. E. S. Sorensen, chairman of the works committee of the board; and Mr. Gosse, of Gosse and Mullen, contractors, relative to the employment of local labour on the water supply works. Mr. Gosse submitted the names of ten permanent employees engaged on the work, and said that, if permitted to employ these men, he would dispense with the services of all other outside labour, and would engage four local residents on Monday. This was agreed to, and, on the understanding that all future labour engaged must be local, and certified to by the town clerk, the second progress payment of £5,552 was authorised.
