SOCCER PROTEST

“ENTIRELY WITHOUT GROUNDS” CABLE FROM SCOTLAND Just before the Auckland Tramways team left last night for Wellington, to met Seacliff in the final for the Chatham Cup tomorrow, the A.F.A. received a telegram that the Scottish Football Association had advised the New Zealand Council that there was nothing on record against James Christie, of the Tramways Club, who formerly played for East Stirling, Christie’s appearance against the Wellington Y.M.C.A. last Saturday was the cause of the Wellington Club claiming the match, after being defeated, on the grounds that disqualification of Christie in Scotland five years ago debarred him from playing here. It is expected that the Wellington Y.M.C.A. protest fee will be impounded, but as the Young Men called no evidence in support of their allegation, it is not expected that the New Zealand Council will be satisfied with merely the forfeiture of two guineas. Nor will the Tramways Club, when the players arrive in Wellington today and learn that the Y.M.C.A. protested with no other evidence than rumours heard in Auckland when the team was here last week-end. The Auckland Board of Control will also consider the situation at its next meeting on Tuesday, and probably will insist on further inquiry into the origin of the unfounded allegations against a player who has represented the province for the past three seasons.
