BUILDING HUIA DAM

WORK TWO MONTHS AHEAD OF SCHEDULED TIME CHEAPER THAN EXPECTED “Excellent progress has been made in the constructional works of the Huia Dam, and the reorganisation of the staff and adjustments to the plant have been fully justified, as in spite of the wet weather, a record amount of concrete has been deposited during the past month,” said the acting City Engineer, Mr. J. Tyler, at the meeting of the City Council last evening. “A total of 3,548 cubic yards of concrete has been placed, making a grand total of 33,668 yards to July 26,” the engineer continued. “The estimated quantity to complete is approximately 5,000 yards.” “The main portion of the structure has now been raised to the 534 ft level above datum,.there being only 10 feet of concrete required on the main portion to complete the structure. “The whole of the excavation for the wing or cut-off walls will be completed within a week, the concrete having already been deposited in these walls to the 522 ft. level. All the valves, standpipe and intake pipes are in position, and I anticipate that the structure will be completed at the beginning of October or two months earlier than was anticipated in my report of May 2 last. Of course, it must be understood that the clearing up, demolishing and removal of plant will require to be done after the main constructional work has been completed. Further, I am of opinion that a substantial saving will be effected on the amount mentioned by me in my previous report.”
