TAUMARUNUI NEWS
Mr. N. Todd (president) presided at the annual meeting of the Taumarunui Bowling Club. In his remarks he referred to the imminent departure from the district of Mr. D. M. Peek, whose services to the club had been invaluable, and whose departure would occasion great regret. The president gave high praise to the Croquet. Club, which had contributed £SO toward the funds during the year, and made it possible to entertain in a much more tuting manner. The Bowling Club's working for the year showed a profit of £l3 7s 7d. Officers were elected as follow: President, Mr. M. Mattar; vice-presi-dents, Messrs. F. Smith, W. Forbes and W. I-lenry; secretary, Mr. fc>. Sarah; treasurer, Mr. W. Me Watters; green superintendent, Mr. S. Dryland; committee, Messrs. Wilson, Girvin, Reid, peters and Hewitt; selection committee, Messrs. H. Mattar. T. M. Peters and iS. Sarah.
An application was recently made by the officials of the Primary Schools Basketball Association to the Herbert Smith Trust for two cups, one each for senior and junior grades. The application was generously sustained, and two silver cups are now in possession of the local association. The senior teams comprise High School (under 14). Taumarunui A, Taumarunui B. Manunui A. Manunui B and Kakahi. Junior; Ongarue, Okahukura. Taringamotu, Taumarunui C and Manunui C. * * * The proposal of the Taumarunui Borough Council to purchase a set of loadometers for use of the five local bodies concerned in heavy motor tralfie has been approved by the Ohura County Council, provided the instruments are purchased through the Main Highways Board. The 'council lias declined to appoint a delegate to attend meetings of the Taumarunui Chamber of Commerce, though expressing complete sympathy with the objects of that body.
At a meeting of the Taumarunui Boxing Association it was resolved that Mr. Clarrie Manson. of Auckland, be informed that the association could not see its way to nominate him for the New Zealand championships, as requested. It was decided to nominate C. J. Roper f°r the light-weight class nnd Charlie Haddon tor the welter-weight classes at the championships The association's training school has attracted a fair number of pupils, and it is expected these will make a good showing at the next tournament on September 7. Several noted boxers from Auckland and W el»ington will be competing.
