HUNTLY

The South Auckland Association ranks haye been weakened by the loss of the Moon Brothers. Alex is now playing for Onehunga and Bill, who is in the automatic signalling branch of the Railway Department, received word last week, to transfer to Dunedin, and leaves for the South this week. He was one of the mainstays of the Hamilton Wanderers, and was equally at home in fullback or centre-half position. A quiet unassuming chap, his friends will be pleased to hear of his promotion in the service. SCHOOL COMPETITION The keen competition in the Schools Soccer contests was very evident, for Huntly B and Kimihia drew with three goals apiece and Huntly A was beaten by a solo goal by Rotowaro. In view of the Webster Shield competition at Wellingto nthis month, the interest in school Soccer locally is at fever heat, and the school games are a treat to witness. Mr. James Douglas (junior) refereed both matches on Saturday, and enthusiasm ran high in the RotowaroHuntly match. The former is leading in the first round of the association’s competition, and it had its work cut out to beat its opponents. Boyd shot the winning goal, and this left-winger with Ridley in the centre, were the pick of the Rotowaro forwards. Kidd in goal, Pawson (centrehalf) and Berry (left-fullback), were sound. The latter’s play was outstanding. He is noted as a youngster wi-tli the right temperament, who will captain the Waikato reps. in the Shield contest. Of the Huntly players, Stevens (centre-half), Powell (left-half), with Moyes (centre) and Fisher (1.R.) in the forward line, were the pick. It is regretted that the latter had to be dropped from the final rep. selection as he is on the light side, but he is the makings of a good player. The Huntly-Kimihia game was a very even contest, and a drawn game was the true criterion of the run of Play. For the Kimihia boys, Goodsall (fullback) was outstanding. His play justified his selection for Wellington, while Rosser (forward) and Thompson (half) were the pick of the others. Huntly’s backs were poor as a whole, though Burton was an exception, and had it n-ot been for Allsop (forward), the Kimihia total may have been greater.

Mr. Chris Bowron -will manage the Waikato boys on their trip to Wellington and. Mr.. N. Yates will be assistant manager. The team selected by Messrs. Bowron and Laing is the best available and has given universal satisfaction, but it is not up to the standard of former years, the weight conditions hampering the selection to a material extent. However, the team will uphold the credit of the Waikato despite the quota having to be drawn from five schools only. The right spirit is in the movement, and , the boys will be billetted out with friends and supporters of the code in Wellington. This is as it should be, and there is no fear of any code of sport while this spirit exists.
