KILLED BY FLYING ROCK
BLASTING TRAGEDY IN CANTERBURY WORKER DIES FROM INJURIES (Special to THE SUN) CHRISTCHURCH, Today. As the result of injuries received when he was struck by a flying stone after a blasting explosion on the Gebbie’s Pass Road on Saturday morning John Hubber, aged 53, a widower, died half an hour later. Another man, John Daly, was struck on the hip at the same time, but was only bruised. Hubber was 80 yards away from the charge and all the men had received warning of the explosion. The force was so great that a fairly large piece of rock was hurled the full distance and struck him on the body, causing a haemorrhage from which he died before a doctor could be brought from Lyttelton. Daly was working with Hubber when the explosion occurred. Neither of them belonged to the gang using the gelignite.
