FIRE IN GASWORKS

TAR BOILER IGNITES (From Our Own Correspondent) DARGAVILLE, Sunday. An outbreak of fire occurred at the Dargaville municipal gasworks about one o’clock this afternoon, when a boiler of tar, which was being heated, overflowed and caught alight. The local brigade was soon on the spot, however, and quelled the blaze before any serious damage was done. A similar fire occurred in the tardistilling plant at the same place yesterday morning, when another boiler containing 100 gallons of tar —a fifteenth of its total capacity—became ignited. A leak in the bottom of the boiler, permitting the tar to run into the furnace, was the cause. The loss on this occasion was estimated not to exceed £l3, the brigade having made a good save.
