STRAND
“SHOW BOAT” One of the most entertaining anil convincing talking pictures yet released, "Show Boat,’’ Carl Laemmle's Universal production, is now in its last few days at the Strand Theatre. "Show Boat” deals with life oh the Mississippi, and some remarkable scenic effects have been incorporated in the film. Glimpses of the mighty river in its ever-varying moods have been caught by the camera, and the atmosphere of the Mississippi has been successfully captured and transferred to the screen. The story concerns the romance and adventures of a young woman. Magnolia, brought up on a Mississippi show boat, a role played with great success by Laura La Plante. Then a debonair and carefree lover comes into the life of the girl. He is a gentleman gambler, down in his luck, but only too willing to accept the male role on the show boat, a part which had been allotted to Joseph Schildkraut, who gives an excellent interpretation. The young pair fall desperately in love, in spite of the vigilance of the girl's mother, and how their romance progresses under the guise of rehearsals is delightfully told in the picture.
