NEW GIRLS’ CLUB
CHANCERY STREET ROOMS FOR SOFT GOODS EMPLOYEES Social and recreational needs of girls employed in soft-goods firms in the city will be served by new clubrooma established in tho National Mutual Assurance Buildings. During the past six years a fund has been established to furnish the clubrooms modernly and comfortably as a result of sports meetings conducted by the Auckland Interhouse Girls’ Sports Association. Situated on the third floor, the clubrooms are charmingly decorated in blue and orange, with furnishings to match. The club occupies 11,000 square feet of floor space, and has a dance floor capable of accommodating 400 couples. The decoration was largely carried out by working bees of the girls, and the lounge is being furnished with money donated by employers of the various soft goods establishments. A flat roof of 10,000 square feet will be used for recreational purposes. Here tennis, basketball and other games will be .played, and night play will also be possible under strong floodlights. It is also proposed to open a golf school for the benefit of members. The club has almost entirely been financed by the girls, who aim at a membership of between 2,000 and 3,000. By charging fees for classes in arts and crafts, dancing and physical culture, it is hoped to maintain the clubrooms on a satisfactory basis. A two years’ lease has been taken of the rooms, with an option for extension. The clubrooms will be officially opened by the president, Miss E. Wagner, next Saturday, and will be followed in the evening by a members’ dance.
