NEW LIFE FOR OLD BATH TOWELS
When bath towels are wearing in places, join two together to make a strong one. They should be as nearly alike as possible, ot course. If the towels show signs of wear at the edges but are otherwise good, tear off the worn parts, tape the edges, turn up wide hems and machine them. Several very thin, worn towels may be quilted together to make a bath mat or a bathing apron. la the latter case, stitch on two tapes to tie round’ the waist when bathing baby. If a large towel has “gone” in the middle, cut it in two, tape the edges, and use for small face towels. All the worn parts may be machined together and used as dishcloths. Towels that have become dingylooking should be placed in a pen and covered with cold water to which shavings of good white soap and the juice of a lemon have been added, feet the pan over a steady fire, and allow the water gradually to come to the boil. If the towels are very much soiled, the process may be repeated. liinse in tepid water, then in slightly blue -water, and hang in the open air to dry. Before using new towels, hem both selvedges. This will considerably increase their durability, for they usually start to tear at the edges.’ A little borax added to the water in which kitchen towels are washed will quickly remove grease and dirt, and keep them a good colour.
