STATE NEWSPAPER
LABOUR MEMBER’S IDEA PRESS BIAS ALLEGED (THE SUN’S Parliamentary Reporter) PARLIAMENT BLDGS., Today. The old claim of Press bias in reporting Parliamentary debates was brought up in the House of Representatives this morning, when Mr. J. O’Brien (Westland) gave notice to ask the Prime Minister to establish a State newspaper. Much of the Parliamentary business and speeches were either distorted or suppressed by the majority of the newspapers in the Dominion, he said. Speeches made by the members of one party were given undue prominence, with the apparent object of misleading the public. Would the Prime Minister take into consideration the establishment of a State newspaper, such newspaper to be controlled by a Civil Service editor whose duty would be to guarantee a correct report of the doings of Parliament and members’ speeches, irrespective of party. Such newspaper, carrying as it would all the Government advertising, would be a profitable investment for the State.
