Two Rep. Games
PROGRAMME AT EDEN PARK Auckland v. Hawke’s Bay WITH two representative games at Eden Park, ltugby enthusiasts will be early on the scene at Rugby headquarters tomorrow. The big game will be between Auckland and Hawke’s Bay, and as a curtain-raiser Auckland B will meet South Auckland.
The meeting of Auckland A and its I old rivals should provide a good game, despite the fact that the odds are in j favour of the home side. Although a young side, the Bay team is reputed j to be fairly weighty, and the fact that ! it was only beaten by Wairarapa ty four points should be a fair indication j of its strength. Auckland will not field exactly the same side that met Wairarapa at Car- ; terton last week, several changes hav- j ing to bo effected on account of in- j juries. Nevertheless it will be a strong | combination both back and forward, j and with the ground having improved considerably during the past week, a fast game should be witnessed. The curtain-raiser between Auck- J land B and South Auckland should be - worth going early to see. In the j Auckland side are a number of players j practically up to full representative standard who can always be relied i upon to provide a bright display. In addition to the representative i games the usual lower grade and sec- j ondary school fixtures will be played Owing to the number of players engaged in the two representative games there will be no Pollard Cup matches. JUNIOR NOTES PARS ABOUT THE PLAYERS On a slushy ground and in heavy rain showers, Auckland third grade representatives gave a very fine exposition of wet day football in defeating Thames juniors by six points to three at Eden Park on Saturday. Loose dribbling rushes that smashed through the ruck, combined with smothering tackling, gave the home side a hard-earned victory. The visiting team, though without several of the best players, who were unable to make the journey, outweighed the Auckland fifteen. Auckland’s pack, however, was markedly superior, securing the ball consistently from the scrums and showing plenty of dash and vigour in the loose. Gould and Colvin were always to the fore in the dribbling bouts, while Ellis and Davis displayed splendid form in the heavy scrumming. The home backs had few chances to show their paces under the conditions, hut in the few opportunities available handled the slippery ball very well. Combination was to some extent marred bv the selfishness of Ludbrook in hanging on too long. Hook, however, scored one fine try as a result of a bright passing movement. * * * Thames fought hard until the end, but could not withstand the sweeping rushes of the Auckland forwards. Edwards, the lock, was one of the hardest workers on the ground. He was consistently in botli the hard scrumming and loose rushes, and was well supported by Darrah and Clark, who scored the visitors’ only try. The backs displayed a solid defence, Geraty and Wenzlick being prominent for their rush-stopping. The Junior Management Committee has now almost finalised arrangements for the Auckland third grade representatives to play a match against Huntly before the end of the present month. This game will be followed later by a return match against Thames juniors at Thames. One of the keenest contests in the lower grades seen this season was staged on Saturday between the leading teams in the fourth grade, Manukau A and Technical Old Boys. A hard battle in the mild ended without either side scoring. Strangely enough the teams drew in the first meeting this season, each then registering three points.
The junior competition is now at its most interesting stage with three teams in both* A and B sections almost on level terms. Marist, one of the leaders in B section, received a surprise
against Varsity B on Saturday, the Tykes registering a narrow win by six points to three after a hard game. A bright exhibition of back play i should be witnessed in the clash between Ponsonby A and Eden at Eden Park tomorrow, provided weather conditions are in any way favourable. Eden commenced the competition with an exceptional run of victories, but since defeat at the hands of City seems to have fallen back, and surprisingly enough went down to Marathon by three points to nil on Saturday. Cupples will play for Hautapu next season. At the present time he is coach to the local senior representatives, and his help has been invaluable this season. This year/ the Cambridge Union has enjoyed more active interest and enthusiasm than for several seasons, and the representative team is an improvement on late seasons. The holders of the Finlay Cup, the Cambridge forwards are recognised to be the best all-round pack in the Waikato, possessing as it does some fine tight and loose players. TAURANGA MATCHES

Milne and Choyce 6, drew with Sargood, Son and Ewen C. Ramsay and Olsen scored tries for the former, while Hurt scored and Solomon kicked a penalty goal for the latter.
SHIELD HOCKEY
TOMORROW’S MATCHES PERSONNEL OF THE TEAMS Owing to the depletion of several senior grade hockey teams on account of the* absence of many players with the Auckland representative team, it is possible that there may be some surprises in the shield games tomorrow. Somerville will be hard hit with four of its men away, and Epiphany may spring a win in their absence. St. Luke’s also has four of its regulars away, and North Shore three. These clubs will therefore be reduced to about the same level, and an even encounter should result. University has sent two of its best down South, and its opponents of tomorrow, Mount Eden, having nobody absent, should be successful. The third grade fixture, which was to have been played at Victoria Park tomorrow between Soverville and St. Luke’s, will not be played because Somerville will be credited with a win, SL Luke’s having defaulted. KING COUNTRY HOCKEY REP. MATCH YESTERDAY (From Our Own Correspondent) TAUMARUNUI, Thursday. Hockey players in the King Country had a day out yesterday, when home and Taihape representatives of both sexes clashed in rattling good contests. King Country proved victorious in the two matches. The men’s team, which won by 7 goals to one, included the veteran Sam Sarah, all-round sport and secretary of the Taumarunui Racing Club, whose work drew applause. For Taihape, Fleet was outstanding. King Country scorers were R. Le Prou, F. Kaye, AV. Fanthorpe and R. Price. N. Donaldson scored the only goal for the visitors. The two women’s teams put up a great exhibition, and the match was sparkling all through. Though King Country was the winner by two to nil, the victory was well contested. Misses Cambie and McGill were the scorers, the final goal by the latter being registered just on time. PORTLAND HOCKEY (From Our Own Correspondent) WHANGAREI, Today. Avoca met Portland for the women’s hockey championship at Portland yesterday, the game resulting in a draw, one goal each, thereby giving Avoca the championship.
from the fact that A. Scott and O’Brien were unavailable. Delgrosso has been further called upon to prove his versatility in the backs by his unexpected inclusion at centre, while so far, Shortland has hardly come up to expectations in the League code, and his inclusion is surprising.
