READING CIRCLE MEETS Ai the meeting of the Lyceum Club Reading Circle in the Lounge on Tuesday evening three one-act plays were read. Stanley Houghton’s “Master of the House,” in which the characters wqre read as follow: —Mr. Ovens, Miss Wyatt; Fred Ovens, Mrs.- J. Prenton; Mrs. Ovens, his second wife, Miss Osmers; Edie, Miss P. Bullock; Dr. Jellicoe, Miss G. Eggleston; and Mr. Skrimshire, Mrs. Scrimshaw. A very powerful little play, in three scenes, “A King’s Bad Bargain,” by Lieut.-Colonel W. P. Drury, in which Harry Quick, Leading Signalman, was read by Mrs. F. Bullock; Joseph Pagett, Reservist, by Mrs. J. Staples; Mrs. Pagett, his wife, by Mrs. T. Campbell; Poucher Martin, Miss F. Jolly; William Wix, Miss B. M. Campbell; Albert Shilliloe, Miss Eastwood. The amusing comedy, “Between the Soup and the Savoury,” by Gertrude Jennings, ended an enjoyable evening. Here Maria was read by Mrs. E. G. Johnson; Ada, by Mrs. J. J. Standrin; and Emily, by Miss Eastwood. Mrs. Cross, who is leaving Rukuhia shortly, was the guest of honour at a very pleasant farewell party given by Mrs. M. H. Hepburn at Taumata. The afternoon passed brightly with music and competitions, the latter being won by Mrs. Flyger and Miss Douglas. Mrs. Hepburn, on behalf of the ladies present asked Mrs. Cross to receive a beautiful bowl as a parting gift. Afternoon tea and farewell songs ended the happy party. Those present were:—Mrs. Cross, Mrs. Jones, Mrs. Flyger, Mrs. Garvie, Mrs. McAuliffe, Mrs. Keane, Mrs. Douglas, Mrs. Parry, Mrs! Grocott., Mrs. Carryer, Mrs. Roebuck, Mrs. Langdon, Mrs. Cresswell, Mrs. Downes, Mrs. Raine. Miss L. Hepburn, Miss N. Hepburn, Miss Jones, Miss Brownlee, Miss McAuliffe, Miss Beaney, Miss Graham, Miss Parry, Miss Derrycourt, Miss Jones, and Miss Douglas. BRIDGE AND 500 MT. ALBERT CROQUET CLUB A bridge and 500 afternoon was given by the Mount Albert Croquet Club in the girls’ clubrooms on Wednesday. Tall vases of spring bulbs made pretty decorations, and a dainty afternoon tea was served by the committee. The winners for the afternoon were: Mrs. Edwards (bridge) and Airs. Barton (500). Among the players were:—Mrs. Page, Airs. Hodgson, Airs. Alaxwell, Airs. Robertson, Miss Lamb, Miss Thomson. Airs. James, Mrs. Fountain, Airs. Edwards, Airs. Smith, Airs. AlcBride, Airs.
