PENSIONS INQUIRY
ANOMALIES CLAIMED PLEA FOR MAORI APPLICANTS Consideration of an amendment to the Pensions Act to avoid anomalies in dealing with elderly Maori applicants has been promised by the Hon. W. A. Veitch, Minister of Pensions. The announcement came to Te Akarana Maori Association, which has made repeated representations for an adjustment, last evening. Disability in assessing Maori pensions has been claimed. The association informed the Government that a Maori was required to produce a certificate of land ownership or lack of property. This was not required of a European applicant for pensions. Difficulties in keeping an index of ownership frequently prevented the issuing of details from the Native Land Court and many Maoris had their pensions reduced or disallowed. The association said it considered the demand for certificates to be unreasonable.
The Minister’s decision to consider the problem is satisfactory in the association’s view.
