“APPLESAUCE”
HIS MAJESTY’S TOMORROW At His Majesty’s Theatre tomorrow evening J. C. Williamson’s new and incomparable comedy company, including Ruth Nugent and Alan Bunce, two noted New York artists, will begin a season of 10 nights in the initial New u Zealand production of Barry Conners's latest and most successful work, "Applesauce,” which has • just terminated record seasons in Sydney and Melbourne. Only four evening performances and a matinee on Wednesday afternoon next can be staged of “Applesauce.” and it will be followed on Thursday next by another brilliant American comedy, “Laught That Off,” which will be presented on Thursday next and three following nights and on Saturday afternoon, August 24. On Tuesday .and Wednesday, August 27 and 28. the delightful domestic comedy, “Pigs,” will be staged, and the company will then proceed to ChristchurchThe fact that “Applesauce” Is by the same author responsible for "The Patsy” and that it attracted larger audiences than the latter comedy in Australia has naturally had the effect of making playgoers keen to enjoy Barry Conners’s latest production, so it is not surprising that there has already been a large demand for seats for its season here. “ ‘Applesauce.’ ” wrote a Melbourne critic, “which received its name from the slang term in America which means flattery, achieved a sensational success at the Comedy Theatre on Saturday night. There are many very delightful touches in the play which appeal particularly to women, especially in the final act, which reveals Miss Nugent as the young wife, happy and contented in surroundings which are very different from those which would have been her lot had she chosen a husband of a practical turn of mind rather than one who has inborn objections to being a wage A feature of the performance is the team work of the artists, which has materially assisted to make. “Applesauce” on of the most successful comedies ever staged in Australia. The productions are staged under the direction of Mr.- George Trader, who also plays important parts in all of the plays.
