De Soto Six •-sets new SAfs'iam fecortf at VefneukPan •A m m Mmrnmm ..'C ' - «** m f m m n* / * zZSSL. STOCK MODEL “DE SOTO” 6 DOES 62.7 M.P.H. FOR 24 HOURS '— H * ■ ♦ , % ABOVE are photographs of the De Soto Six Roadster used by officials to test the L-traek prior to Captain Malcolm Campbell’s famous recent attempt in his Blue Bird upon the World’s Speed Record at Vemeuk Pan. This stock car had previously established a new South African Record, under official observation of the Royal Automobile Club of South Africa. The only alterations from strictly Standard were, a higher gear ratio, smaller windshield and stripped of fenders. In 24 hours the De Soto covered 1505 miles—an average of 62.7 m.p.h. During the last four hours the De Soto averaged 68 m.p.h. and for one lap (approximately 7 miles) averaged 72 J miles per hour. This new South African Record of 62 m.p.h. for 24 hours is within 4 m.p.h. of the World’s Record for three to five-litre cars recently made by a Chrysler Car in France. What higKer testimony could be asked to the design, quality, and reliability of De Soto engineering in a Stock Car?
