TAUMARUNUI FREEHOLDS
QUESTION QF REVISION
PETITION TO BE MADE A meeting of residents interested in the freeholding of the town was con- ! vened by the Taumarunui Chamber of Commerce, in response to a request from the Tc Kuiti Chamber that such should be done to consider a proposal for presenting a petition to Parliament regarding revision of freeholding valuations in the two towns. A. B. Laird, who presided, explained the position as it affected Taumarunui, and said that the freeholding valuations had been made on wrong principles. They had been made on the assumption that the goodwill of a property. valued by the borough council at £7OO, was worth £2,000. On a revaluation being made, however, the unfortunate purchaser found the price of the freehold increased to £3,000. I e Kuiti Chamber’s action in getting up the petition. A committee consisting of Messrs. A. G. Riches, W. I homas, T. P. Davis, D. Simmons and A. J. Langmuir was appointed to enlist the support of freehold licence holders, a subscription of £]/l/_ to be invited from eacli licensee to cover the cost of preparing and presenting the petition.
The meeting confirmed the chamber of commerce’s appointment of Messrs. Laird and M. If. Wilks as Taumarunui’s representatives at a further meeting to take place in Te Kuiti,
