In the Market Place

ORANGES IN DEMAND GOOD FRUIT CLEARANCES This week’s fruit market has seen j satisfactory clearances, and today’s I sales were good. Island oranges are notably in good demand. All classes of apples are meeting with a good inquiry. Pears are commanding only fair attention. Lemons and poorman oranges arc i selling slowly. Mandarins today were scarce and dear. The citrus fruit brought this week from Australia was by no means a ! large shipment, mainly owing to high j values ruling in Australian markets. Cabbages, cauliflowers, pumpkins and j swedes are especially well supplied, i with a steady inquiry. Better quality ! cauliflowers, sold 'by the sack, have j dropped slightly, but cabbages have firmed, if anything. In today’s poultry market, cockerels were again the medium of keen competition and good prices were realised for choice young birds. Hen-s are attracting a better demand, owing to an j improvement in quality. Ducks are meeting with a fair inquiry. j Quotations: FRUIT | Apples.—Delicious, extra fancy, 11s to 12s 6d : others, Ss to 10s; Winesaps, 8s to 10: Stunners, Hawke’s Bay, 10s 6d to 11s; Doughertys, 6s 6d to 8s Gd.
