STARVING AUSTRALIANS

AUTHORITIES WARNED OF TROUBLE FOOD RIOTS POSSIBLE SYDNEY, Wednesday. The trade depression caused by unemployment; is causing serious concern in Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide. Reports are received daily of men, women and children who are starving. A Salvation Army officer at Bathurst has warned the authorities that the suffering among a percentage of the lower classes is so acute that there is grave danger of some of the men causing food riots if relief is not forthcoming for their families. A deputation of Trades Hall officials at Melbourne today interviewed the Premier, Sir William McPherson, on this subject. They frankly told him that unless some change occurs in the outlook of the unemployed very soon there will be trouble whether the Premier liked it or not.

One member of the deputation said it was only logical to assume that men would not starve all the time while there existed others who had plenty to eat.

The Premier promised to consult manufacturers’ and builders’ organisations. However, he warned the deputation that he would not tolerate strikes, which, he contended, were in a large measure responsible for the present deplorable economic and 4 ndustrial conditions.
