FISH RESEARCH
STUDY OF FRESH-WATIR VARIETIES CENTRALISATION SOUGHT (From Our Own Correspondent) WELLINGTON, Today. A special committee of the ton Acclimatisation Societ5 x has recommended central control for research work concerning New Zealand freshwater fish. The society decided to find, a considerable time ago, £1,200 to establish a fellowship of scientific fr'esh-water fish research at Victoria University College. Professor H. JB. Kirk, of the college, and Air. A. E. Hefford. chief inspector of fisheries, were on a committee formed to direct the work. A fellowship was awarded, and, in Christchurch, a student has been doing similar research work. The suggestion now made is that, a central control of the work of \he students would avoid overlapping. Acclimatisation societies will discuss the question next month. Valuable reports have already come from the students in Wellington and in Christchurch. If sufficient money can be found by the societies to carry out a New Zealand scheme, there should be excellent results. The opinion is that the high research standard should be maintained.
