STOLE FROM COOK
THEFT WHILE HE WAS DRUNK TWO MEN FOR SENTENCE Press Association NAPIER, Wednesday. In the Supreme Court today Timothy John Daly and Frank Chapman were charged that about July 14, at Wairoa, they stole the sum of £SO from the person of John Conner, a camp cook. Chapman was further charged with receiving from Daly £ll knowing it to have been dishonestly obtained Daly pleaded guilty, but in evidence in the case against Chapman, who pleaded not guilty, he said that Chapman had nothing to do with the theft. He had given Chapman £ll because the latter needed it, and he told Chapman he won it at horseracing. Conner came to Wairoa with £64 and began drinking heavily. He became so dazed that he knew no more until he was set down at his camp by Daly and Chapman from a taxi. When he woke up he had only a few shillings left. The jury found Chapman not guilty of theft, but guilty of receiving stolen money. The jury made a recommendation to mercy on the grounds that they believed Chapman was under Daly’s influence. Both men were remanded for sentence.
