“APPLESAUCE”

HIS MAJESTY’S ON SATURDAY

There was a very large demand for seats when the box plans were opened this morning for the approaching J. C. Williamson, Ltd., comedy season, which begins on Saturday night next, when the enormously successful and clever 1 comedy “Applesauce” will be staged here for the first time. Owing to the brevity of the season only four evenings and one matinee (Wednesday next) can be staged of “Applesauce” and on Thursday next and three following evenings, with a matinee on Saturday week, the charming comedy drama, “Laugh That Off,” will be staged, and the season will close with a production of “JPigrs,” which will be presented on Tuesday and Wednesday nights and on Wednesday afternoon, August 27 and 28, “No criticism,” wrote a Melbourne critic, “can be launched against ‘Applesauce.’ It is one of the most delightful entertainments ever staged in Melbourne and it will prove even more popular than ‘The Patsy,* which is by the same author. It has not an evil thought or a sour face, and it proceeds to prove through sweet acts that there is a heart of gold in the most of us.” The J. C. Williamson, Ltd., management was evidently fortunate to obtain the services of Miss Ruth Nugent and Mr. Alan Bunce for the leading roles in the three comedies to be presented, because they are two of New York’s best-known comedy stars and we are to enjoy their artistry in the prime of its youth. They became great favourites with Australian audiences during their run of 10 months, principally spent in Sydney and Melbourne. Other notable artists who will make their first appearance during the approaching season are George Henry Trader, Viola Fortesque, Gertrude Auguarde, Frank H. Fox, Sadie Bedford and Phoebe Martin. Messrs. Sidney Stirling. Reginald Newson and Les Donaghey have been enjoyed previously in New Zealand. The approaching season cannot possibly be extended.
