OTAHUHU WORKSHOPS
SOCIAL HALL OPENED There was a large meeting of employees of the Otahuhu Railway Workshops and their friends at the official opening of the social hall last evening. Mr. A. D. F. Sampson, manager of the workshop* presided, and extended a cordial welcome to those present. Mr. G. T. Lynje, chief mechanical engineer of the Railway Department, on behalf of the general manager, Mr. H. H. Sterling, extended the best wishes of the department to the employees at Otahuhu, and expressed the hope that the hall would make for the happiness of the staff and their families. He said that the conditions under which the railwaymen ot New Zealand worked were exceptionally favourable, and expressed the opinion that they were in advance of those in England. Mr. E. Casey, divisional superintendent for the North Island, added his congratulations to the men. He read a telegram from the Hon. W. B. Taverner, Minister of Railways, expressing his best wishes in connection with the function, and also his appreciation of the work done by all those responsible for the designing and construction of the workshops. Mr. E. T. Spidy, superintendent of the workshops, also spoke. Mr. H. T. Clements, Mayor of Otahuhu, in officially declaring the social hall open, referred to the comprehensive nature of the scheme that the department had carried out, making special mention of the fully-equipped ambulance station housed in the workshops.
