EARTHQUAKE DISTRESS

APPLICATIONS FOR RELIEF CLOSE THIS MONTH CENTRAL COMMITTEE’S WORK The earthquake relief committee which met in Welbngton yesterday decided that applications for relief shall close on August 31 and distribution of the large fund would chen begin as fast as claims could be investigated and approved. The Mayor of Auckland. Mr. G. Baildon. who returned from "Wellington this morning, said the committee had already passed payment of about £7.500 in preliminary and urgent relief. The central fund now stands at about £105.000, and of this sum Auckland and Wellington have each contributed about the same—nearly £13,000. These efforts head the list of contributions by local bodies. It is expected that the Mayor's fund, which now stands at £12.966. will easily top the £13.000 mark, as the Devonport Borough Councils’ collection is to be put through the Mayor's fund. While in Wellington Mr. Baildon interviewed the Prime Minister, Sir Joseph Ward, about the possibility of the remission of the tax on the race meeting to be held in Auckland on August 31, to benefit the earthquake relief fund. Sir Joseph, who expressed sympathy with the request, said he would have to consult the Crown Law Department. The Minister of Internal Affairs, the Hon. de la Perrelle, also adopted a sympathetic attitude, but was likewise not sure whether special legislation would not be necessary. MAYOR’S FUND NEARS £13,000 The following additional contributions to the Mayor of Auckland's Earthquake Relief Fund have been received at*the Town Hall. The fund is now not far short of the £ 13,000 mark. £ "" s d Previously acknowledged . . 12,927 18 8 Mahurangi Presbyterian Cnurch 9 1 k Proceeds dance at Wharepoa 16 0 0 First Church of Christ Scientist (additional contribution) 0 14 0 Several residents of Wharepoa • 6 12 6 Proceeds dance at Hukerenui 6 6 0 Total £12,966 15 S
