DISPUTE OVER “EXTRAS”
MILFORD TUNNEL CONTRACT ARGUMENT SETTLED TAKAPUNA COUNCIL MEETS The Takapuna Council had before it at last night’s meeting the award of the arbitrators in the dispute concerning “extras” upon the Milford storage tunnel contract carried out by Messrs. Stevenson and Sons. The trotal amount awarded was £492 7s 6d, and each party is to pay its own costs. The assessors’ fees were fixed at 12 guineas. Removal of the council's stables, on the main road, opposite Taharoto l-’ark, was sought by the Takapuna Western Area Ratepayers’ Association. It was resolved that the request could not be granted this year, but a report Mill be brought down with a view to removal next_jyear.
Specific performance of an agreement made in September, 1927, between the council and certain ratepayers of Marine Terrace, Bayswater, together with various sums as compensation, was sought by solicitors for the ratepayers. The dispute concerns the construction of a road as defined in the agreement. Power to negotiate a settlement was entrusted to the Mayor and the borough solicitor and engineer. The town clerk reported that 53.7 per cent, of this year’s rates had been paid in time to receive the rate rebate. The district fund account was thereby enabled to transfer £5,000 to fixed deposit. Satisfaction M’ith this position was expressed by members.
In order to meet the requirements of ratepayers, an experimental change of hours of the town clerk’s office Mas decided upon. As from September 1, the office Mill be open on Friday evenings from 7 to 9 o’clock, and will be closed on Saturday mornings. The inspectors’ office hours on Saturdays will be 8 to 10 a.m., after which the offices will be closed. This decision does not affect the engineering department.
