SPECIAL COMMITTEE TO BE SET UP GOVERNMENT INQUIRY r THE SUIT'S Parliamcn?ar-p Rc 'porter ) PARLIAMENT BLDGS., Today. It is understood that a special commission will be set up shortly by the Native Affairs Department to inquire into the subject of Maori girls and women working for Chinese in various parts of New Zealand, and notably in the Auckland Province. There probably will he on the commission representatives of Lie Native Affairs Department. possibly the Health Department. Agricultural Department, and a representative of the Department of Maori Hygiene. The importance of the question is recognised, especially in view of the complaints made by members of the Maori race and various Maori associations.
The inquiry was foreshadowed by the Minister of Native Affairs, Sir Apirana Ngata, in his speech during the Address-in-Reply debate. Final details of the commission, it is understood, have yet to be settled. It Is believed that the position has been found to be worse than was anticipated.
