ETON TRAGEDY
.__.“ BODY OF VICE—PROVOST FOUND IN THAMES A BRILLIANT SCHOLAR (Australian and NZ. Press Association) ' LONDON, Tuesday. The death has occurred under tragic circumstances of Mr. Hugh Vibart MacNaghten, vice«provost ot‘ Eton since 1920. Mr. McNaghten was a brilliant classical scholar, and had great influence at Eton, where he was educated, and had been a. master from 1886 to 1920. He had been in poor health for a year and disappeared last week. As it was feared that he had committed suicide dragging operations were carried out in- the Thames, and his body was found floating near Windsor.
Mr. Hugh Vibart McNaghten was educated at Eton and Trinity College, Cambridge, of which he was a scholar. He won the Craven scholarship. the Browne medals for Greek and Latin epigrams, the Powis medal in 1853 and 1884, the Browne medals for Greek and Latin odes in 1884, and the Chancellor’s medal in 1885. He was for some time a. Fellow of Trinity before going to Eton as an assistant master. He published among other books "The Story of Catullus.” “Eton Letters," “Emil Cone: The Dian and His Work," “Fifty Years of Eton in Prose and Verse,” and various translation of Latin and Greek poets.
