“TIGHTEN THE BELT”
MR. H. R. JENKINS CRITICISED REMARK 0N UNEMPLOYED (THE SUX‘S Parliamentary Reportrr) PARLIAMENT BLDG., Tuesday. The member for Parnell (Mr. H. R. Jenkins) was severely taken to task in the House of Representatives this afternoon for his utterances in connection with unemployment by Mr. D. G. Sullivan (Avon) during his Budget speech. Mr. Jenkins, said Mr. Sullivan, had advocated that the older generation should tighten its belt when unemployed instead of going to the Government labour bureau.
Painting a word-picture of the man who went home day after day to his wife and children with the reply that there was nothing doing in regard to his search for Work, Mr. Sullivan said that Mr. Jenkins could have no conception of how a man felt Who was out of work and had a. wife and family to support. Yet the member for Parnell made such observations as the one alluded to. A Voice: He’s used to selling—— Mr. Speaker: Order. Mr. Sullivan went on to refer to the undermining effects on the constitutions of children of unemployed men who were suffering privations. This would be one of the problems of the future, he said.
“I hope,” he concluded, “that we Will not have any-more inhumane suggestions of the kind made by the member for Parnell.”
