French Airplane Visits Blenheim
LARGE AMPHIBIAN PRAISE FOR AIRDROME Press Association. BLENHEIM, Today. Extraordinary public interest centred in the special visit to Blenheim of the French cruiser Tourville‘s large amphibian airplane. It is interesting to note that when her wheels touched the ground at Woodbourne field it was her first ground landing since leaving France. The pilot, Lieutenant J. G. M. Bell—ando, who was accompanied by Major L. M. Isitt, Acting-Director of Air Services, and a mechanic, was welcomed by his \Vorship the Mayor, and ofiicials of the Marlborough Aero Club. The party was subsequently entertained in town.
Lieutenant Bellando, replying to the welcome, said there was no airdrome in the whole of France which would even begin to compare with the VVoodbourne field. :
The amphibian was met half~way across the Straits by one of the Aero Club’s moths and was escorted to the field. She made a. perfect take-off on the return journey to Wellington at 4.15 p.m. Blenheim is the only town in New Zealand to he visited by the plane.
