WAIPA HIGHWAYS
l-IAMILTON-NGARUAWAHIA (From Our 010.. Correspondent) TE AWAMUTU, Tuesday. ; The Waipa. County Council and the‘ ‘Main Highways Board are gradually arriving at an amicable settlement regarding the question of providing a permanent road through the county. The Main Highways Board, at Monday’s meeting of the'Waipa County Council, stated that it was pleased to hear that the council had arranged 'for the use of metal chips and Vv'aikato River gravel for the future maintenance of Great South Road between Hamilton and Nzaruawahia, and that the council correctly understood the position with regard to the scheme outlined for the reconstruction of the ‘Great South Road to a point near Hamilton. Also. there were other toconstruction schemes to be carried out during the same period. The board‘s chairman stated that the work might actually take more than four years to complete. but as soon as‘ funds could be released for the exteu- ‘ sion of the scheme there seemed no, reason why the section southward from Hamilton to the county boundary could not be dealt with. . As soon as the board was in a position to do so. it was proposed to pay £3 for £1 subsidy toward the cost of surfacing the remainder of the Great South Road in the Waipa county. The board Wished the council clearly to understand that the commencement of the work south of Hamilton, and the rate of progress, would depend entirely upon the funds which would be available to the board for work of this nature.
