Steeplechase Day

Wlnter Racmg at Rlccarton ITH the boat horses from the North bland and the pick W of the South bland rcpro>cntutiV€> engaged, 111 a Canter. hnrgv Jockey Club began its Grand National carnival 5-0519); (lay with a splendid array of talent There wa; a tremt‘ndoug crowd in attendance. the going good. and the weather was perfect. The lotalisamr handled £61066 10$. again“ £61094.

The North Island drew first blood when Democratic won the Hunters}, Hurdles from another Northerner. Birkbeck. In the early stages Barring-l ton and Mime went away with a. com- ' munding load, but near the seven fur-‘£ longs post Barringlon began to weaken! and :1 little further on Mime headed? him. At the half-mile. however. Democratic. who was ridden a. very patient! race by Alan McDonald. gradually be-! gun to improve his position, and by’ the time the straight was reached he‘ was proclaimed the Winner. )limo was, actually first to turn for home. but! Democratic had his measure long before ' the lust obstacle was reached. Overl

the concluding stages Democratic was not extended, and he won easily by three lengths from Birkbeck, who beat Mime by four lengths. Democratic, who races in the ownership of 311'. \V. H. Gaisford. who also owns Commendation. had several outings last season. but his success today marked his initial win. Birkbeck. the favourite. ran a sound race into second place. but he had too much ground to make up over the last mile. He should be improved by the outing. and a win for him later at the carnival would not be surprising. Mime ran an improved race into third place. and but for nearly coming to grief at the last fence may have beaten Birkbeck. Grand National went a fair race into fourth place. The best backed were Birkbeck £1.49; Democratic £1328, and Barrington £774. . Trial Hurdles

Gala. Day scored an inlpressive \vinl in the Trial Hurdles. Tilson took him to the front from the outset, and with half a mile to go he was bowling along well. At that stage he had as his nearest attendants Amorist, Carinthia and 'Apache. and though the field began to bunch entering the straight Gala Day shot away again before the last Ifence was reached and held his advan{tage to Win by a length from Apache, [who was a length and a-half in front of Thurnbell, with Amorist close up fouth.

Since: his arrival from the North Island Gala. Day has performed most consisiently in his races, and his victory today was not surprising. Apache who hails from the South, finished fast to gain second place. He did not junipl as well as some of his opponents. but over the last four furlongs he hurdled well>and was running on strongly at the close. Thurnbell also ran a good race, but the horse most likely to improve is Aniorist. He sweated very freely before the start. and though he held second place to Gala Day at the home turn. it was only over the last furlong that he weakened. The race should work considerable improvement in the Australian-bred gelding, and he is sure to run well at his next appearance. Amorist was favourite. - with £1.518 invested on his chance, and next best backed were Apache £1,046 10s. and Gala Day £1,015. Cashmere Plate In the Maiden Stakes at the Hunt meeting. Leader and Desert Song fought out a great. finish. and they repeated that performance today in the Llashmere Plate. Entering the straight, the pair was together. and though Leader led Desert Song slightly with 100 yards to go. it was expected that the last-named would finish more stoutly. but contrary to expec~ tations. Leader hung on resolutely and in the end drew. out a little and won by u. length. Air Laddiewas two lengths further back in third place. and ot‘ the others Honeycomb and Stately did. best. Bonrose. the favourite. was never; sighted. in the early stages. but sheg finished on well. Captivate was an-I other who was doing well at the finish, and he should be heard of before long. Bonrose £1,576, was favourite. and Leader £775. and Pat’s Boy £614. were, best backed of the others. ‘ t ’ Jumper-5' Flat 1 i Aberfeldy registered a splendid per"l lformance when he Won the Jumpers’ >Flut from Fine Acre. and his victory has now brought him into prominence ’for the Grand National Hurdles. He [always was handily placed. and though Fine Acre had an appreciable break entering the straight the Quin Abbey gelding finished brilliantly and wasl going away at the end. Brightlingl ran a surprisingly good race into thirdl place. He held a good position for‘ the first six fur-longs. but at the fur; turn he began to drop back. How—i (lever, he came again in the straight; ’aud was a. good third. Overhaul dis-1 appointed his admirers. but the race‘ should improve him and he may do (considerably better in the National Hurdles. I-lorornea ran a good race. but Local-no. Novar and Perle de Leon lwere disappointing. I Enfield Steeplechase j Dubious won the Enfield SLe‘;l’Jit:Ichase after a great set-to with Sih er :Light. but he was lucky. Kaikahu. iwho had taken charge with six furilongs to go. looked a certain Winner Iturning for home. hut when in the lead he hit hard at the last fence and disilodged his rider. This left only lDubious and Silver Light in the non:test. and Dubious who ~ finished lstrongly. beat his younger rival by :i ilcngth and admit. Later Kuikz‘nu 'was remounted L - a spectator and igrtincd the minor placing. Bun Ayron Etell at the second fence and Alurir:

buulkod Lhree times at the second ks: obstacle. Handy baulked at the m and rails. Winter Cup Historic put up one of the beat m, tox-nuances of his. career when n. m the “‘inter Cup. Prior to the :.. there were doubts as to big a...” to begin brilliantly enough to (tho 5. a handy position curly. which is en. tial in the big Riccarton mile, but the Nassau horse must have am his critics with his beginning qua. ties. He was never further back M fourth. and after being third into (in straight he soon ran past Gay Sm. net. and came on to win most deck. ively.

\Vhen «he field was released, Royal Saxon was first to become prominenL but when the pace had settled down, Gay Sonnet held charge. Racing ml the six furlongsv Gay Sonnet and Gold Cure were together in front, and had as their nearest followers Royal Sam Zippor, Kaiti. Prickles, and Buck Duke, with Historic gradually “ending his way through on the inside. Ag [he half-mile there was no alteration in the leading positions. except thlt Historic had taken fourth plan, Swinging into the straight, Gay Sonnet 'led Gold Cure, Historic, Ray-1 Saxon. Kaiti (on the fence). 21m, Prickles. Royal Game. and Maui. In. side the distance Morris sent Historic along at full speed. and. quickly get. ting the beter of Gay Sonnet. mg on to Win by a length and 3.4.1:]; Taboo finished Well to gain third place, and then followed Otajri. King Balboa, Royal Saxon. Teheka, and Black Duke. Avonhead Handicap The Avonhead Handicap was a good betting race. there being strong sup. port for Shortly, Red Boa. Mambo. and Roi de Val. Membo went to the trout soon after the start, and led into the straight from Grand Acre. Starshooter. Hounslow. and Dundalk. Membo all] held charge .with a. fun-long to-go. and though challenged by Stairshooter. he held his place. to win by a long neck. Shortly was close up third. and then followed Hounslow. Starshooter was ridden very badlyl and with a different horseman up he may win easily at his next start. Following are the results:Hunters' Hurdles. of £250: 1: miles.—2 Democratic. 9.2.1. A.
