This fact was mentioned at last evening’s meeting of the council, and it was decided to take action for the recovery of amounts that are two years in arrears and not three years as heretofpye. _ _ _

Cr. Kayes pointed out that more assistance of the unemployed in the dis—trict was needed, and he quoted instances of hardship. He thought a. further loan of £50,000 should be raised for relief of unemployment. The joint committee is to consider the project. A letter was received from the acting chief postmaster at Auckland asking that details be furnished in support of the complaints that had been made regarding the alleged delay in the de—livery of telegrams from the Edendale Post Office. A statement of the council’s complaints in detail is to be supplied. The building inspector refiorted that permits involving £142,666 were issued during the financial year ended on March 31. Included were 116 dwellings, for which permits were valued at » £88,326, 115 new inotor-sheds. £4,126, and 205 additions, £14,854. Blocks of shops and dwellings in brick and concrete were valued at £35360. During August permits involving £27,549 were issued, including 16 dwellings.
