The Kirk-W'indeyer Cup golf contest was begun today at the Metropolitan course between the New Zealand and New South VVales teams, when the two foursome matches were played over 36 holes. # _
Apperley and Fawcett (New South Wales) defeated K. Ross and T. H. Horton by 5 up and 3 to play. At the end of the first 18 holes the game was 2111 square. Morrison and Harrison (New South Wales) defeated Sloan Morpeth and J. L. Black, by 1 up. At the end of the first 18 holes Liorpeth and Black were 2 up.
The singles will be played tomorrow. There was dull weather for the morning play. Ross and Horton were 3 down at the end of the first. nine holes, owing to Apperley’s accuracy with long putts. Horton was drivlng well and took the 12th and 13th holes. A weak putt at the 17th hole lost them the opportunity to square the match, but Ross, with a great second shot, enabled New Zealand to square the match at the 18th hole. The approximate scores were: New Zealand, 79; New South ”\Vales. 81.
Morpeth and Black played excel-1 lently. Both drove fur and sure. and‘ were out in the morning in 41. or one‘ stroke less than the New South \Valesi pair. At the 7th hole Black's drive was lying against the fence, and was played out left—handed by lMorpeth. At the 11th hole Morpeth’s drive was 50de ahead of Harrison's, but it! was not until the 16th hole that the} New Zealanders were 1 up, when Mor- ‘ peth left Black a 4ft putt. Llorpcth's approach was too strong at the 18th hole. but Morrison missed a 2ft putt. leaving the New Zealanders 2 up. The approximate scores were: New Zealand. 78: New South Wales. 82. PLAY IN DRIZZLING RAIN After luncheon drizzling rain fell. Morpeth was bunkered in the left corner at the 19th hole, and Black was short. New South \Vales squared with a. 4‘ Morpeth sank all2ft putt to win the 26th hole with a. "birdie" 3. and at the 27th hole he sank a 20ft putt for a. "birdie" 4. New Zealand was 3 up at the turn. but the New South \Vales pair played magnificently at the finish. showing great sureness in approaching while the New Zealand players failed on the wet greens, and lost by 1 down. Fawcett and Apperley lost the 19th hole, where Horton putted well. New South “'ales took the 24th hole. and at the 27th llorton was in a. cross—bunker. and the hole cost six strokes New Zealand was 1 down. Fawcett was in rare form. and Apperley was putting well, and they won most of the next holes and the match. In the evening the rain increasa. The New Zealanders did not show to advantage today. SOUTH AUSTRALIAN TITLE The amateur golf championship of South Australia was won by Legh \Vinser. a former South Australian :amateur champion, and runner-up t-l tthe last three years. who defeated A. F. Dye by 1 up, after being 2 down [and 3 to play.
