BIRKENHEAD SCHOOL
MEETING OF COMMITTEE The Birkenhead School Committee held its monthly meeting last evening. Air. J. luacdonald, chairman, presid—ing. Mr. A. G. Menzies, headmaster. reported that during the month the board's architect. Mr. Lfiller, had visited the school and had agreed to the installation of four radiators in the new building. at a cost of £ls. A supply of free exercise books had been received The roll stands at 354, an increase of eight for the month. while the aver—age attendance has improved by 12. In reply to the committee’s request that the question of providing swimming baths for the borough be reconsidered. the Borough Council advised that the question had been deferred for consideration at a later date. To effect improvements in the school grounds the committee decided to form itself into a working bee on Saturday week. _, Several members reported that the caretaker had complained that he had to wait for his salary. The secretary replied that near the end of a. quarter. after paying accounts, there was not sufl‘icient funds in the bank to pay the caretaker, and it meant waiting unti'. the Education Board paid in the next quarter's allowance. He said that the board’s allowance was £34 10s 10:] every three months, out of which had to be paid £2l for the caretaker. and £9 for sanitation services, which left a balance of £4 105 for the school supplies. gas and firing. and supplies for the caretaker and other petty accounts.
It was decided that in future the caretaker’s salary should be given preference. and the secretary and Mr. E. Clarke were appointed to wait on the chairman of the Education Board and explain the position, and try to get a larger allowance or get the board in pay for the sanitation service.
