MOOSE AND WAPITI

———.-——~— SHOOTING LICENCES ARRANGEMENTS 1N SOUTHLAND 1"; (so Assov-intiou “WELLINGTON. Today. The authorities recently communicated with the Southlaml Acclimatisu—tion Society on the question of issuing licences for the taking at \vapiti and moose near Lake Te Anau ‘during the forthcoming season. It is understood that the society is agreeable to the suggestion that two licences be issued for the moose season. The fee. it is believed, is about £3O a licence. Referring today to the issue of licences, the Minister of Internal Ail fairs, the Hon. P. A. de la Perrelle, said that in conjunction with the officers of the department and the Acclimatisation Society very careful con~ siderat'ion had been given to the nuni—ber of licences to be issued for wapiti and the country to be prospected. “The nufiiber of licences proposed." said the Minister. "is the same as last year, three blocks with two licences each. with the right to take two heads for each licence. Last year the tak—ing of Stags with heads of not less than ten points was allowed, but this year it is proposed to alter this to not less than 12 points. The licensees. however, are requested to shoot two cows.”

A prospecting block suggested for Wapiti was one that reached from the north arm of Te Anau. on which there was reason to believe there was a. herd of wapiti. but the society did not feel warranted in charging a. licence fee for it until it had been prospected. "In previous prospecting authorities," remarked Mr. de la Perrelle, "arrangements were made. with the person to whom the prospecting licences are granted as to the payment of a licence fee in case “‘apiti is shot. and if the licence fees are received, the distribu—tion of money should be the same as that received from stalking blocks, half to the Acclimatisation Society and half to the Department of Tourist and Health Resorts."
