MAUNGANUI FOR ’FRISCO. —— In continuation of her voyage from Sydney the Union Company's 3.31.8. Maunganui is scheduled to leave Wellington at 3 o’clock this afternoon for Rarotonga, Papeete and San Francisco. . FOXTON FOR FOXTON.—-—The local office of the Union Company advises that ‘Lhe Canterbury Stemship Company’s new motor-ship Foxton will not be comipleted until tomorrow. Cargo for Fox‘ton will now be received on Thursday.
KENT AT PANAMA.—En route from Auckland to London, Avonmouth, Glasgow and Liverpool, the Federal Line steamer Kent is reported to have reached Panama. last Saturday. She sailed from Auckland on July 19.
WAIOTAPU DUE SATURDAY. - Due at Auckland at 6 a..m. next Saturday from the Pacific Coast: ports, via Papeete, the Union Company’s trans-Pacific cargo steamer “'aiotapfi. after discharge here. proceeds to Melbourne and Sydney to complete.
ISLAND FRUIT STEAMER \NAIPAHI.—The local office of the Union Company advises that the Island fruit steamer “'alpaihi, which arrived at Barotonga. at 4 p.m. last Friday from Auckland, works the rest of the Cook Islands, and is to clear Rarotong‘a tomorrow for Auckland, Where she is due today week.
H E RTFORD SAI Ls.—The Federal steamer llertford, which has been discharging Liverpool cargo at Auckland, left last evening for Napier, Wellington. Lyttelton, Port Chalmers and Timaru to complete. However, shortly after leaving the vessel had to return to port owing to minor engineroom repairs. She eventually sailed this morning.
RIMUTAKA EXPECTED. —— Scheduled to reach Auckland from London and Southampton today, the New Zealand Shipping Company’s liner leutaka has not yet reported by wireless. She has passengers and mail for New Zealand, and cargo for discharge at Auckland and “Ellington. _
MELBOURNE PASSENGER SERVICE. —-Afl.er undergoing an extensive overhaul at Port Chalmers the Union Company’s steamer llanuka is to resume in the Melbourne passenger and cargo service tomorrow. The vessel is to leave Dunedin in the afternoon for Melbourne, via Lyttelton and “Wellington. She is scheduled to clear “Wellington next Saturday and to reach Melbourne the following Thursday.
RARANGA DUE SHORTLY. - The Shaw, Savili and Albion steamer Raranga. is scheduled to arrive from Liverpool tomorrow, but she has not yet reported by Wireless. The vessel has general merchandise from West Coast ports of Great Britain for discharge at Auckland, \Vellington, Lyttelton, Dunedin and Bluff. Cargo for Auckland will be discharged to the ageiwy of A. S. Paterson and COlll- - Limited.
RONA DUE TOMORROW._“'ireless advice received from the Colonial Sugar Company’s steamer Rona states that she will arrive from Suva. at seven o'clock tomorrow morning. The vessel has a. full cargo of raw sugar for discharge at Che]sea. Owing to the berth at Chelsea being occupied by the Dunrobin. the Roma. will berth at the King's “'harf until it is vacated on Friday, when the Dunrobin is to sail.
VESSELS TO BE RE-ENGINED.——Thei Richardson Company’s auxiliary vessel‘ Koau and the company's small steameri‘ Koutunui are to come to Auckland about‘ the end of August to be re-engined.‘ They are each to be fitted with Fairbanks—Morse twin screw oil~engines. At present the Koau has a benzine engine and the Koutunui is steam driven. They are both wooden vessels. The Koutunul's tonnage is 171 gross and she was built at Auckland in 1910. The Koau was built at Te Kopuru in 1917 and her tonnage is 144. Both Vessels are used in the company‘s coastal trade between Napier and the East Coast bays between Napier and \Vellington. ROYAL MAIL PROGRESS.—The Royal )i’aii Steam Packet Company. which will celebrate in Septevnlrer the 90th anniversary of the granting of its Royal Charter, has in the last decade or two made history on a scale such as its incorpora~ tors could never in their Wildest dreams have conceived, writes the "Syren and Shipping." From an undertaking which less than 730 years ago was struggling with adversity it has become the controlling partner of a. shipping group which, in point of tonnage owned it for no other reason, has no equal in the world. Its own and its allied fleets aggregate 2,690,692 tons gross; they traversed during 1928 20,000,000 miles on the Seven Seas; carried something like one and a-half nllilion passengers and 15,000,000 tons of cargo, and em~ ployed on board daily an average of 36,000 men, not to mention women. Operations on such a gigantic scale would not be possible without organising machinery of the highest perfec on an a man courageous enough to accept the ultimate responsibility for its successful functioning. “'e do not envy Lord Kylsant the vast power he wields. not merely as a shipowner. but as a leader in other branches of industry, for when all is said and done. its possession must carry with it worries and preoccupations of which no ordinary individual can have any adequate conception. Under his control the Royal Mail Company and its allies have well maintained their place in the trades in which they are engaged. Competition is intense in the South American serwce, and the effects are all the more marked 1n that foreign rivals enjoy State aid m the shape of subsidies: but there seems _no reason to fear that British enterprise will fail to hold its own against all comers.
TAINUI REPORTs.—L. D. Nathan and Company. Ltd, advises that the Shaw, Savill and Albion liner Tainui has reported by wireless that she will teach XVellington from London and Southampton at eight o’clock next Sunday morning, her scheduled date. The vessel will land passengers and mail at \V‘ellingtou and then proceed to Lyttelton. Port Chalmers and Timaru to unload her general merchandise cargo.
MARAMA FROM SYDNEY.—-Early this morning the Union Company's intercoionial passenger steamer )larama arrived in the stream at Auckland from Sydney, and later berthed at the Central Wharf to land her passengers, mails and cargo. Good Weather was experienced until after leaving Suva. when she encountered head winds and sweus which delayed her arrival at Auckland by over five hours.
