“SHOW. BOAT” . One of the most moving romances ever told on the screen as well as-one of the- most spectacular productions ever made, is offered picturegoers in Unlversal‘s big sound and dialogue super-film. "Show Boat,” now attract—ing large houses at every session at the Strand Theatre._ This colourful epic of the Mfis‘sissippi Valley and of Chicago in the lastv’genoration embodying the glamorous love story ,of Magnolia the young showboat girl (played by Laura. La Plante), and Ravenal, the romantic young gambler (played by Joseph Schlldkraut), is based upon Edna Ferber’s novel of the same, name. Included in the presentation "are the movietone highlights of the celebrated New York musical production. “Show Boat," staged by Florenz Ziegfeld with noted Broadway stars. The interpolation which enables theatrego‘ers actually to see and hear the New York production was made possible only by special arrangement by Carl Laemmle and Mr. Ziegfeld. Helen Morgan and Jules Bledsoe are the out—standing Ziegfeld staxs heard. In its music “Show Boat" is a. veritable anthology of America’s most popular music of the last half-century. From the old-fashioned favourites of the ’Bo's rendered by a. strident steam calliope and by melodies by tuneful darky voices, down fronl the "Coon song” and “rag-time" age to the present negro spiritual era. the music is well played or sung and gloriously reproduced.
