APOLOGY TO MIGRANTS
INDIGNATION MEETING ABOARD BENDIGO MR. HUGHES UNDER ESCORT (Unitea. P.A.—By Telegraph — Copyright) Reed. 9.5 a.m. SYDNEY, Today. It is reported that after the steamer Bendigo left Fremantle, the passengers held an indignation meeting to protest against the statements made for publication by Mr. Collingwood Hughes, a former member of the House of Commons, who is a passenger, with his wife, and who had made condemnatory statements about the class of migrants voyaging to Australia in the ship. Mr. Hughes, in his cabin, with the door locked, refused to attend the meeting, though ex-servicemen aboard ship promised him protection. He was prevailed upon to write an apology for his references to Australia House and the medical officers concerned, but he denied using some of the words attributed to him. Later, Mr. Hughes, under an escort, attended the meeting of passengers, who received his verbal apology in tense silence.
Mr. Hughes had said that the migrants included cripples and people showing signs of imbecility, who ■would be no credit to England and no help to Australia.
