Prisoner Struggles In Arms of Police
SCENE IN COURT OBJECTED TO GAOL Struggling violently in the arms of two stalwart constables, Peter Bradley was removed from the dock at the Police Court this morning shouting imprecations and gesticulating. Bradley, aged 51, was charged with being found drunk in Princes Street and assaulting Constable Miller. He pleaded not guilty on both charges. “I wish to be tried by a higher court —judge and jury!” he shouted. Constable Miller said that he was called to Dr. Gunson’s house in Princes Street as the result of a telephone call about 4.40 p.m. on Saturday. There he had found Bradley, drunk on the verandah and hammering on the door with a stick. The women in the place were frightened. When witness had taken accused to the watch-house, Bradley had struck him on the mouth and kicked him. Sergeant Clarke, who had also been in the watch-house, described Bradley as very violent. “We have done everything we can for this man,” commented Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M. “He has been on the Island and was objectionable there. At present it is costing the country about £2 a week to keep him under charitable aid. Gaol is the best place for him.” Bradley complained that the police had kicked him and ill-used him. He was shouting about this and had turned to the public gallery, while taking off his coat, when the police removed him.
Sentence of two months’ imprison, ment was imposed.
