HAURAKI PLAINS NOTES

The Auckland Chamber of Commerce’s scheme for placing city boys desiring farm employment in touch with farmers desiring assistance was approved by the Ngatea branch of the New Zealand Farmers' Union, at its monthly meeting last week, and it was decided to co-operate in every way. Resolutions protesting against the setting up of a tariff board, expressing the opinion that matters of tariff should be dealt with by Parliament, protesting against the continuation of a protective customs tariff! and a protective railway tariff, and against the action of the Government in .abolishing the cash-on-delivery system, were passed by the Ngatea branch of the New Zealand Farmers' Union last week. A very useful service is being performed by the members of the Turua branch of the Plunket. Society, who have adopted the practice of providing light luncheon and afternoon tea at the monthly stock sale. The venture Is proving a source of steady income to the branch. v e st Earth-worms, those steady borrowers which do so much good in most soils, can become a pest if present in sufficient numbers, as farmers of certain parts of Hauraki Plains learn to their cost at this time of the year. It is a case of too much of a good thing, despite the assertions of agriculturists that soil cannot have too many earth-worms, for every winter on certain parts of Hauraki Plains worms appear in such numbers as to make the ground unduly soft. Possibly the rise in the soil moisture drives them to the surface. * e « Messrs. V. Bower, J. Dalgety, J. C. Foote, W. Ganley. senr., E. Keane and E. C. Mitchell have been appointed a board to control the Pipiroa Domain and Saturday, September 7, has been appointed for the first meeting.
